
Oak Hill, a blend of Federal simplicity and the grandeur of Paladian architecture, was built for James Monroe, in 1820, after he was newly elected the President of the United States.It was constructed by his close friend William Benton. Today, the estate is privately owned by Thomas and Gayle Delashmutte. Oak Hill is one of only 6 places in Loudoun County to be designated a National Historic Landmark.
Oak Hill is filled with furnishings that belonged to Monroe, John Adams and Dolly Madison. Beautiful twin marble fireplaces were a gift from the Marquis de Lafayette. who was grateful to the Monroes for saving his wife from the guillotine during the French Revolution.
In addition to Lafayette, guests at Oak Hill have included Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams, James Madison, and John Marshall.
In 1885 Henry Fairfax purchased Oak Hill, increased the acreage, grazed cattle and sheep and raised pippin apples which he sent to Queen Victoria.
